A man tries to get out of a predicament about himself by going into comedy. Things go well for a while – but soon he’s finding it harder to make people laugh. Might this be to do with something inside himself? At a drop-in centre for people with psychological problems, he starts to see himself and society in a different way…
The Stand Up and Down raises awareness of mental health as a social issue. One in four people will be affected by psychological problems at some point in their life. “Stress and mental health will become a public health crisis in years to come” – BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour, 9 June 2014. Mental health is under-resourced in the NHS. Handplay Productions sees theatre as a creative way of addressing these concerns.
