A poor economy lengthens more than the hemline. In 1984: second-wave feminism, economic boom and mini skirts. 2014? Fourth-wave, underemployment, the mid-length.

Women are getting married later, having children later, and hope to have it all figured out by 30. Expectations and austerity have changed what motivates or, in some cases, de-motivates twentysomethings to take control over who they are, who they will become. Portmanteau will take you on a journey through time as measured by The Hemline Index, exploring the lives of two twentysomething women in their defining decade.

The Hemline Index bridges the generation between mothers and daughters. Portmanteau shares stories about employment, relationships, friendships, and the body through verbatim text, movement, spoken work, and original music.

"Lovely, lyrical … Draws out the shared humour and humanity between individuals who have everything in common apart from the decade they live in… Played with warmth and compassion by Rose Wardel and Melissa Janine Booth" – 4*, The Scotsman, Aug 2014

About the company

Portmanteau began in 2012 with two practitioners; Sophie, a spoken word artist, and Melissa, a choreographer, both working with common ground in devising theatre. Through Let’s Get Angry, their debut performance, Portmanteau's unique approach to storytelling was created. Today, Portmanteau are Melissa Booth, Rose Wardle, Eva Hibbs and Corinne Wahlberg. Through this new collaboration, they are creating new work that aims to continue Portmanteau’s approach and discover new stories to manifest.

The Hemline Index was created through the support of Tony Loy Foundation, Oxfordshire and Theatre Delicatessen. Portmanteau would also like to extend their gratitude to RichMix, 5Ideas, and The Pleasance for their support in the development of the work.
