The City Limits is a LARP (live action role-play) in which a group of up to 60 participants undertake a symbolic exodus from London, walking 15 miles from Limehouse Cut, through the Olympic Park and Hackney Marshes, up into Walthamstow, across the imaginary Rubicon of the North Circular before disappearing into Epping Forest.

This LARP is designed for private renters who feel that London does not belong to them. The act of walking out of the city is a symbolic act of protest against a housing culture that makes the capital prohibitively expensive. It is also a chance for people to come together, share stories and find strength in the fact that there are others in the same boat.

A LARP is not theatre, but it IS drama. There is no “performance” for an audience; the “action” is purely for the benefit of participants. In this LARP, we will invite participants to develop, through a short workshop, basic fictional characters with some resemblance to themselves.

During the walk, small groups of up to 10 players will form relationships between their characters, reflect on past experiences, consider the beauty of the city and grit their teeth against its hardships.

About the company

Formed in 2012, Hobo Theatre is a wandering arts company making work in unconventional contexts, telling stories with an international perspective about wanderers, adventurers and people lost at the margins. Hobo projects have included conventional stage plays, improvised drama and live action games at venues like Camden People’s Theatre, The Yard, The Bush, Somerset House, Turner Contemporary and a host of non-theatre locations.
