Oi, cissy! is a body-driven exploration of the day-to-day experience of being trans or non-binary. Trans people find themselves caught up in a biopolitical discord that they did not intend and do not consent to. They are doctors, students, scientists, activists, feminists, artists, nurses, carers, teachers. This production gives voice to the experiences of the performers themselves, and reflects the experiences of genderqueer people more generally, by exploring what it’s like to be living an ordinary life while your very existence is a profoundly political and disruptive act.

Through spoken word, music and physical theatre developed by the performers in collaboration with the director, Whatsthat Performance present an opportunity for everyone – cis or trans – to experience anew the reality of politicised embodiment in public space, and the power / disempowerment experienced when one’s body is a provocative symbol.

Audience Feedback from Amsterdam Fringe Festival

“Absolutely beautiful. A very personal and moving experience. I shed a tear or two. I loved the way it was told in a raw and personal way and ended with such positive energy and a message that everybody is beautiful and special. You lot certainly are.”

“So real, so believable. It was moving but also challenging, I was forced to confront my judgements and think again about who I am and how I see my world.”

“It was a marvelous and pure act. Being able to experience the love /hate /laughter /fear of other trans people is a 200% amazing experience. It helped me feel validated, connected, united, strong… I want to emphasise the strength these people have, sharing their stories is something huge. Thanks a lot Cissy’s!”

“Thank-you for a show that encourages me to keep finding myself, who/what I am or want to be. Thanks for making me know I’m not alone in these ‘queer’ feelings.”
