Immerse yourself in a collage of images, a sound-scape of memories, and a palette of colours. Try to find the light in the dark.
Don’t Turn The Lights On shares fragments of collected teenage stories: moments of sexual awakening, adolescent longing, peer competition, strive for independence and doubts. Theatre Counterpoint invites you to slip in and out of narrative recognition, come and complete the journey with memories of your own youth.
This devised performance is constructed using principles from classical music tradition of Bach’s fugue: a form of call and response. Theatre Counterpoint aims to establish a connection among theatrical elements within the fugal structure. The performance conveys musicality without relying solely on sound: a journey where movement and text are played like instruments in a musical composition. Actions deliver rhythms; images repeat; speech is dynamic.
Part of Sprint Festival 2016: London’s biggest and best festival of the newest, most adventurous theatre from across the UK and beyond.
Catch Don’t Turn the Lights On in a double bill with Skrimshanks on the same evening. Two shows for just £16!
About the Company
Theatre Counterpoint is a collaboration of performing artists trained in different fields. The core concept of this ensemble is to bring all the disciplines together in harmony, and we explore the interdisciplinary and intercultural themes utilising the analysis of musical structures as dramaturgy for the composition of devised theatre.
