Work in Progress Performance

Balancing Acts uncovers unique documentary perspectives on and experiences of depression and healing through sensorial and interdisciplinary means. Using first-hand interviews as a catalyst to create audio-visual and performative portraits, the work opens up and responds to intimate and honest reflections from individuals who cope with the condition.

This work-in-progress is underpinned by our ethnographic research into the topic, which aims to collect and creatively communicate real stories from those who have experienced depression – asking: what pressures does this generation face? How does one express depression? How does one find balance within a fragmented and fluctuating mental state? How does one create coping mechanisms with what is available?

Balancing Acts re-envisions this ethnographic material. Stories of struggle, resistance and hope are explored within a sensory staging space to stimulate new understandings and reflections on the subject.

About the Artists

Filmmaking and anthropology collective, Kaleido Films, collaborate with theatre company Feral Foxy Ladies, to generate a new creative practice for communicating social research. We make work that blurs the boundaries of documentary and performance, in order to gain deeper emotional and sensorial insights into the human experience. Previous collaborations include ‘Dive or Fall’ (Battersea Arts Centre Freshly Scratched 2015) and ‘I Got Dressed in Front of my Nephew Today’ (Edinburgh Fringe 2015 & Calm Down Dear, Camden People’s Theatre 2014)
