Part of our Autumn 2016 season. Catch Balancing Acts in a double bill with Holy Presents – two shows for £16.

Presented by Kaleido Film Collective in collaboration with Feral Foxy Ladies

Balancing Acts is a solo-performance which uncovers unique documentary perspectives on and experiences of depression and healing through sensorial and interdisciplinary means. Incorporating audio interview, film, verbatim, performance and contemporary dance, the work opens up and responds to intimate and honest reflections from a variety of individuals who cope with the condition in different and diverse ways, in an attempt to challenge the stigma which proceeds to surround it.

This show is underpinned by our anthropological research enquiry into the topic, which aims to collect and creatively communicate real stories from people who have experienced depression and mental health issues; asking individuals – what are the pressures that this generation face? How does one express an experience of being depressed? How does one create recovering mechanisms with what is available to them?

Through an interplay of film montage and on-stage performance, Balancing Acts builds a sensory staging space for these documentary audio recordings. In sharing in these audio-visual and performative portraits, the show aims to build a deeper emotional insight into the experience of depression, encourage new conversations about it and explore ways to deal with and potentially overcome it.

About the company

Filmmaking and visual anthropology collective, Kaleido Films, collaborate with theatre company Feral Foxy Ladies, to generate a new creative practice for communicating social research which challenges social stigma. We make work that blurs the boundaries of documentary and performance, in order to gain deeper emotional and sensorial insights into the human experience.

Previous collaborations include Dive or Fall (Battersea Arts Centre Freshly Scratched 2015) and I Got Dressed in Front of my Nephew Today (Vault Festival 2016, Edinburgh Fringe 2015 & Calm Down Dear, Camden People’s Theatre 2014).
