Kate McGrath steps down after eight-year tenure
Camden People’s Theatre is delighted to announce the appointment of Isobel Colchester as chair of its board of trustees. Isobel is Chief Executive of the poetry promoter Poet in the City. Isobel’s appointment comes after a short transitional period as co-chair with Kate McGrath, who now steps down. Director of the independent producers Fuel, Kate has been chair of CPT’s board since 2012, leading the organisation through a transformational period that included securing regular core funding as a National Portfolio Organisation with Arts Council England and signing a 20-year lease on the building for the first time in our history.
Isobel joins Camden People’s Theatre at both a challenging and exciting moment for the organisation. Although currently under Covid-enforced closure to public audiences, CPT recently announced its biggest ever round of commissions to emerging artists, and this autumn presents several outdoor community events alongside a season of curated digital work. It is soon to embark on its first ever capital development project, re-imagining its Hampstead Road home as a vibrant civic space and community resource, open day and night, with greatly increased visibility, access and improved visitor experience.
Isobel Colchester said today: “I’m incredibly proud to be joining the board of this amazing organisation, which is sector-leading in its approach to daring new artistic approaches and fierce localism. It has been truly inspiring over the last year to see how CPT has risen to the immense challenges presented by the pandemic, paving a way not only to financial recovery, but to securing a genuinely lively and radical programme fit for the times, with a commitment to artists at its core. With a capital project underway to boot, it is a pivotal moment, and I can’t wait to work with our hugely talented Directors Brian, Kaya and the wider executive team to build on Kate’s outstanding legacy.”
Brian Logan, artistic director of CPT, commented: “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Isobel as chair. She has big boots to fill: we’ve been so lucky to have Kate giving us extraordinary leadership, support and expertise over the last few years. We can’t thank her enough. But we feel equally lucky to now start working with Isobel, whose expertise, dynamism, enthusiasm for CPT, and understanding of the local ecology have already been a huge benefit to the organisation. We’re thrilled to have her onboard!”
The board of trustees of Camden People’s Theatre are: Isobel Colchester (chair), David Lewis, Melissa Wong, Rachel Bagshaw, Ian Whittaker, Nicola Clements, Conrad Murray, Agatha Yerbury, Anthony Gray.
Founded 26 years ago, CPT is one of Britain’s most influential studio theatres. Its mission is to champion different ways of thinking about the world by supporting emerging artists making adventurous theatre – particularly about issues that matter to people now. Its work is rooted in the communities of Camden and London. Through it, they celebrate the bold, the spirited and the unconventional.
CPT is continuing to support artists at this difficult time, and is engaged in an ongoing delicate balancing act between its responsibilities to its artists and community, and its need to ensure its own long-term survival.
