Tom Hughes – what to expect

What you can expect from Tom Hughes as part of the Starting Blocks showcase

Can you give us a teaser of what you'll be presenting as part of the Starting Blocks showcase on 30 March?

We are presenting bits of two 1970s American movies, both directed by Terrence Malick, all mashed-up together with some classic driving music, a bit of Zizek-gone-dance-party and some other silliness.  We are exploring what it means to pack up & leave town in our world, and whether it's really possible to unhook & get some private time.

How have you been developing the show over the past weeks?

There's 5 of us.  So we've been playing and talking.  Talking and playing.  Listening to music.  Exploring the incredible CPT building.  Stealing the props from the other Starting Blocks shows & playing with them.  The idea for the piece's structure arose organically through the combination of our play and the practicalities of the Starting Blocks scheme.  We came in with one idea, but now the piece is something that I don't think we had dreamt of.

In 5 words, what can the audience expect to look forward to in your performance?

An end of Sprint blowout.

In 5 words, how would you describe your style of performance?

Ummmmm: kinda drama, kinda not.

Tom Hughes will be presenting a work in progress performance as part of the Starting Blocks showcase on 30 March.
