For our latest blog, we interviewed Mitchell Cushman, Director of The Ex-Boyfriend Yard Sale, to find out what’s it like to direct a solo piece that is all about love and math formulas.
What is it like to direct a solo performance?
There’s quite a lot of responsibility you feel, directing someone’s solo performance – especially when it’s a piece like this one, where the details are drawn directly from the creator’s life. I feel a duty to Haley, and to the gentlemen featured in this piece, to be respectful, thoughtful, and multi-faceted in our portrayal of each of these people, and avoid reductive depictions. I love having the opportunity to work with a performer/creator like Haley, who has such a unique voice, and gifted instincts – we’ve also been collaborating off and on for almost ten years know, so you build up quite a language together.
How would you describe the show in three words?
Mathematics of Love
What is the best present you’ve received from an ex?
Apropos to this show, I think I would have to say it was a mix CD, many years ago, that turned me onto some music that is still some of my favourite.
After directing this show, how much would you sell it for?
It’s not for sale.
What is the most you’ve spent on a romantic partner?
Probably tickets to see Hamilton in Chicago – but worth every penny!
