Guest Blog: The Absurdity Behind Being an “Adult”

For our latest blog, Emilia Stawicki reflects on how BOX. Theatre Company was created and their inspiration behind Camp Be Yourself.

Catch Camp Be Yourself on Thursday March 7 at 9pm as part of Sprint 2019. Click here to find out more.

We are so excited to be sharing ‘Camp Be Yourself’ with all of the Camden People’s Theatre Campers this Thursday.

We met at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Betty did the 3 year Acting Course and Emilia did the Musical Theatre Masters, and upon meeting we immediately knew we wanted to work together on a project.

After graduation, out in the real world without the safety net of school, we started to discover the difficulties and absurdities of true adulthood. Out of the deep seeded fear we began to realise how absolutely hilarious and ridiculous the idea of “being an adult” is. No one truly knows what they’re doing, so to make something out of nothing, and to create a piece that will hopefully make others feel less alone, or at least allow them to take a break from life and laugh at and with us for an hour, was our ultimate goal.

Drawing from our experiences on trying and failing at being “successful adults”, setting them in the absurd tradition of the American summercamp, and packing in confetti and musical theatre jokes we made a show/adventure we’re excited to share with Campers and Camperettes alike. Our motto is “for those of you who can’t be yourselves on the outside, you camp be yourself here” so come be your selves with us for a wild a crazy night, this Thursday March 7th at 9pm!
