Camden Youth Theatre completely changed my life. I joined in 2016, after just starting my new college life in London. I am a very extroverted person but I am often nervous going into drama programmes and clubs as you can often be put in a harsh environment. After my first session I knew CYT was perfect for me. CYT never pressures you to do anything you don’t want to do but never did I experience anything I didn’t want to. You always work as a team and feel included in everything. It’s a family when you join Camden Youth Theatre.
Camden Youth Theatre also helped me really find my love for music, I learnt how to incorporate movement, music and acting into one whilst at Camden Youth Theatre. All aspects of talent are celebrated at CYT. I did 2 shows whilst at CYT, starting with We Wanted to be The Sky, which was my first show there and I loved it. Real theatre written by real young people! Your words are in the scripts and it’s coming straight from you. I then workshopped Noise for a long time with CYT which we then got the opportunity to go to Chrysalis festival with it which was amazing for me! Going to Scotland with a youth theatre with a show that came from our brains felt amazing.
I left CYT officially after Chrysalis as a performer when I turned 20. This was definitely not the end of my youth theatre journey. I was called in for one session to help with their show “It Snows” and I fell in love with working there and being with the youth theatre and they haven’t got rid of me since! I now spend my Mondays and some weekends working with amazing talented youth devising and working on shows with Camden Youth Theatre. Running workshops for them, and sometimes even with external schools due to all the connections I have made with CYT.
Joining Camden Youth Theatre was the best idea I have ever had, I feel forever grateful for all my opportunities. I have learnt so much about myself, the industry and the world! I hope to continue this work for a long time, it’s definitely the biggest, most fun, talented and chaotic family you can be a part of.
